Waldhotel Tropfsteinhöhle
Restaurant and rooms right next to the cave entrance. Also the right place for a wedding party or birthday cake.
To the WaldhotelA proposal nobody expects: 30 metres below the surface, among dripstones and in the warm light of the cave. Quiet, private and completely independent of the weather.

The idea
If you are looking for marriage proposal ideas in Germany, you will mostly find beaches, viewing towers and restaurants. They are lovely places, but they share the moment with others: with wind, with passers-by, with the phones at the next table. In the Wiehler Tropfsteinhöhle (Wiehl Dripstone Cave) it is different. Down below it is quiet, the light is soft, and all around you dripstones have been taking shape for thousands of years.

The most important thing first: a cave is not a place for grand productions but for a quiet, honest moment. That is exactly what makes it so fitting. Your partner stands 30 metres underground, hears only you and the dripping of water – and will remember every detail later.
There is a practical advantage, too: it is about 8 °C in the cave all year round. Summer heat, rain or snow on the hill above make no difference to your proposal. You plan once and do not need a back-up date.
Schedule
The proposal itself is up to you; you agree the framework with the venue. What exactly is possible depends on the day, the group size and the season. Based on the information so far, two routes come into question, which we honestly present as suggestions: (provisional)
Step 1
Phone the venue (+49 2262 7920) and say that you are planning a proposal. The staff will then know and make sure the moment is not disturbed.
Step 2
You can either book a tour as a closed group, just for the two of you and perhaps a few close friends or family, or join the last tour of the day, when it is quietest below. Both are available on request, and the venue confirms the terms.
Step 3
After 26 steps and a walk through the passages you reach the deepest point, where weddings are also held. Here you stay a few steps behind, and the guide gives you space. Candles can be set up by arrangement – whether and how is decided by the venue for safety reasons.
Step 4
Back at the surface there is a glass of sparkling wine or a meal in the Waldhotel restaurant, only a few steps away. If you like, book a table for the family straight away.

Tips
The ring. It is damp and in places wet down below, and the staircase has 26 steps. Carry the ring in a pocket that closes, not loose in your jacket. If you want to keep it secret until the moment, put it in a small tin and do not let go of it.
The photographer. Photos in the cave are tricky: little light, high humidity, narrow passages. A phone with a good night mode often gives lovely pictures. If you would like to bring a photographer, please discuss it with the venue first, because there is little room on the tour and flash can be disturbing. Whether a photographer may go down with you is confirmed by the venue (provisional).
Clothes and shoes. A jacket is a must even in midsummer, and sturdy shoes are wiser than heels. If you want to dress up, change above ground or bring a coat.
Dinner afterwards. At the Waldhotel you can raise a glass right after the proposal and have dinner as a couple or with the family. Please book a table in advance, especially at weekends.
Accessibility. The cave is not step-free; the way down is 26 steps. If your partner has difficulty with stairs, please talk to the venue openly about it.
Wedding
If you have asked in the cave and heard a yes, you already have a place for the next big step: civil wedding ceremonies have been held in the dripstone cave since 2002. The wedding table stands at the deepest point, about 30 metres underground. Some couples return to where the proposal took place.

On our page about weddings in the cave you will find the day in seven steps. The reception is possible at the Waldhotel next door, so everything is planned in one hand. Available dates are given by phone.
Getting here: by car it is roughly an hour from Cologne/Bonn Airport and about 1 hour 15 minutes from Düsseldorf (approx., depending on traffic).
Questions
Yes. It is best to agree your plan with the venue by phone beforehand (+49 2262 7920). Whether a private tour or the last tour of the day suits you depends on the date.
There is no separate charge for the proposal itself; the normal tour admission applies (adults €6.50, children €5.50). The venue quotes the price for a private tour on request.
Candles may be possible by arrangement, and the venue makes the decision. Real flames in a cave need supervision and cannot always be allowed.
Please clarify this in advance. The passages are narrow, and flash disturbs other guests. The venue will confirm whether and how a photographer can accompany you.
Yes. It is about 8 °C underground all year round, so the weather above ground does not matter. A jacket and sturdy shoes are still important.
The restaurant of the Waldhotel Tropfsteinhöhle is only a few steps from the cave. Please book a table in advance.
Only to a limited extent. The way down is 26 steps and the cave is not step-free. Please talk to the venue beforehand.
Enquiry
Tell the venue what you have in mind and your preferred date. The earlier you ask, the easier it is to find a quiet tour. For the tour itself, book under “Book a tour” or by phone.
