An experience gift is popular because it does not sit on a shelf. A tour of the Wiehler Tropfsteinhöhle (Wiehl Dripstone Cave) is a gift for people who already have everything: grandparents who want to do something with their grandchildren, a couple who like nature, children who love adventure.

What makes it special: you do not give an object but a shared afternoon. The tour takes about 45 minutes, and a visit to the wildlife park and the Waldhotel turns it into a whole day if you wish.

Ordering a voucher.

If you want to make the gift bigger, combine the tour with a meal at the Waldhotel restaurant. Whether there is a joint voucher for this is to be clarified on request. (provisional)

An overnight stay at the Waldhotel can also be part of the gift, for example for a silver wedding anniversary. The venue will advise you personally on this.

When a voucher fits.

Birthday: an adventure for a milestone birthday, gladly with a group, perhaps with the family. More under Family celebrations.

Christmas: the classic for people who do not know what to wish for. Note the winter break; the voucher is then valid for spring. More under Advent & Christmas.

Easter: a voucher in the Easter nest for the Easter holidays, to go with Easter in the dripstone cave.

Children’s birthday and wedding: a small gift for the birthday child, or a present for a wedding in the cave.

Wrapping the voucher nicely.

A voucher is a thin piece of paper, so it is worth making it an experience. A small torch, a postcard of the cave or a hand-drawn treasure map leading to the voucher turn the slip of paper into a gift. Children love having to find the voucher themselves.

For grandparents a voucher with a date is a good idea: “We are going to the cave together in spring.” Then it is not a gift for some time in the future but an appointment. Take the stairs into account: 26 steps are manageable for most, but not for everyone. Ask beforehand how fit the recipients are.

There are three things to clarify before buying a voucher. First: who is it for, and how well can that person manage the stairs? The way down is 26 steps, and the passages are in part narrow and low. Second: when is it to be redeemed? The cave has a break in winter, so for vouchers for December or January spring applies automatically. Third: should a meal be added? Then ask the Waldhotel directly about a combination.

If you are unsure how much time the recipients need, it is best to plan generously: the tour takes about 45 minutes, and then come arrival, the wildlife park and possibly a meal at the Waldhotel. Half a day is quickly filled that way. If you give a voucher for several people, also remember that only a limited number of places is free per tour, so the recipients should arrange a date in good time. That way the gift becomes an experience without disappointment.

Getting here: by car it is roughly an hour from Cologne/Bonn Airport and about 1 hour 15 minutes from Düsseldorf (approx., depending on traffic).
