Waldhotel Tropfsteinhöhle
Restaurant and rooms right next to the cave entrance. Also the right place for a wedding party or birthday cake.
To the WaldhotelWhen it gets dark, the cave turns into a ghost train: projectors, holograms and costumes 30 metres underground. The Halloween event returns every year, in 2026 from Saturday, 17 October.

If you are looking for a Halloween outing with children in Germany, you need a place that is spooky all by itself. A cave is such a place: it is dark, it drips, the passages are narrow. At Halloween the Wiehler Tropfsteinhöhle (Wiehl Dripstone Cave) strengthens this mood with projectors and holograms. Projections appear on the rock walls in the passages that you can only experience here.
The Halloween adventure is meant to take place every year. In 2026 it starts on Saturday, 17 October. Times and prices have not been fixed yet; they will appear under Guided tours & tickets and in the news post on Halloween 2026. (provisional)
The venue is also planning spooky tours for children in the autumn holidays before Halloween. Dates for these will follow as well.

The Halloween adventure is aimed at families. Which age it suits is still to be confirmed by the venue; as a guide, primary-school-age children usually enjoy the atmosphere, while smaller children should be accompanied, and you should ask beforehand what they feel up to. (provisional)
Spooky here means: dark passages, surprising projections, a little haunting. It is meant to be an adventure, not a frightening ordeal. For sensitive children, agree on the phone which tour is the right one.
Costumes are welcome, and they are part of the fun. When choosing clothes, though, think of the conditions underground: 8 °C, 26 steps, partly wet floors. A long cape is impressive but can make you trip. Sturdy shoes under the costume are a must, and a jacket under or over it is strongly recommended.
Masks that restrict vision are not a good idea in cave passages. Face paint is the better choice. Children like to bring torches, preferably a small one.

Book early. Especially for the start on 17 October and in the autumn holidays, places per tour are taken quickly. After Halloween the winter break begins: the cave closes from the end of October or the beginning of November until spring.
After the tour you can eat at the Waldhotel restaurant or take a walk in the wildlife park. When a visit in the dark is possible depends on the tour times. (provisional)
Being scared is most fun when you know what is coming. Tell your children beforehand that it is dark in the cave, that it drips, and that projections may appear on the rock wall that are not real. Tell them it is a game and that they may take an adult’s hand at any time. Children who are prepared have more fun and less fear.
A good trick: practise at home in a darkened room with a torch, casting shadows on the wall. Then the children recognise the projection in the cave for what it is and laugh about it. A little ritual helps, too: when someone gets scared, count to three together and take a deep breath.
For parents: stay calm, even when your child is startled. Your calm is contagious. And if it really does not work, leaving after a few minutes is possible, and the group does not have to wait. Briefly agree this with the guide at the start.
After the scares, warmth is welcome: cocoa, cake or a soup at the Waldhotel restaurant. If you have children in costume with you, you will often get the best photos there. How early the cave closes on Halloween depends on the tour times, which the venue is still to confirm. (provisional)
Secure a place early. Once the times are fixed, they will appear under the guided tours and in the news post.
